my natural skin care routine

Happy Holidays everyone! I hope you are all enjoying this lovely time of year with friends and family. I recently received a great question from Emily over on the Barefoot and Frolicking Facebook page. She asked,

"I have a question for you! Do you wear makeup, and if so, what brand do you wear? I'm looking for a completely natural, hopefully organic makeup brand to begin using."

People are usually surprised when I admit that "yes, I do wear makeup!" (because my face and skin usually look fairly natural).

Generally, I use a few simple products from Physician Formula's Organic Wear Make-Up line (usually foundation, concealer, eyeliner, a little bronzing powder and blush, and just a touch of eyeshadow, with less in the summer months of course).

Overall, I prefer using Mama Nature in my beauty routine and don't like to weigh myself down with chemicals and oily, slicky petroleum based products - yuck! I find that using a few simple, basic products with a few natural items here and there, can create a subtle, healthy, and natural glow.

Apart from makeup, I thought I would share some of my other favourite natural beauty items that are part of my everyday skincare 'routine.' I'm sure these are some of yours too - enjoy!

1.  Dry Skin Brushing

Dry skin brushing has numerous health benefits; it helps stimulate the lymphatic system and circulation,  improves digestion, increases cell renewal, and helps to remove cellulite.

Make sure to select a natural bristle brush and use small, circular movements starting from the ankles and working upwards towards the heart. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus or lavender essential oil will also take your dry sin brushing to another level.

Try to set aside a few minutes each morning for a dry skin brushing session - your skin and bod will reap the rewards.

2. Coconut Oil

Without a doubt, coconut oil is an absolute go-to essential for me. I use coconut oil as a body and face moisturizer, face wash, make-up remover, smoothie thickener et al. It also doubles as a nice infusion for the bath every once and awhile. You can also use coconut oil as part of an oil pulling regimen (for more on oil pulling, click here).

In the past, I've used sweet almond oil as a moisturizer, but have since gravitated more towards coconut oil in the last little while. When selecting a particular brand, remember to choose an organic, cold-pressed, and less refined coconut oil; the more it smells like coconut, the better it is for your bod.

3. Raw Honey

Apart from being a sweet treat, raw honey has remarkable healing properties when used both internally and externally. I use raw honey as a face wash and healer for cuts and spots. Raw honey also makes its way into a simple exfoliating mask I use from time to time.

Sweet Skin Treat

1. Combine 1 tbsp of honey on top of one halved lemon.
2. Apply to face in a circular motion.
3. Leave mixture on skin for 3-5 minutes; then rinse and pat dry with a towel.
4. Leave skin bare or follow up with coconut oil as a moisturizer.

4. Bath Beauty

I have always loved, loved, loved baths! From a young age, I always enjoyed a lovely soak in the tub - a great place to get some thinking done, read a good book, and indulge the skin in some simple pleasures.

A simple way to enjoy your next romp in the tub is to add a cup of Epsom or Himalayan sea salt, which are great for soothing tired yoga muscles. A little dash of essential oil (be it lavender, grapefruit, what have you) will also soothe that soul for the better.

Recently, I tried a ginger-infused bath inspired by a post on My New Roots - try it out for yourself. Quite the experience.

5. Living Libations

I have definitely extolled on Living Libations glorious product line before (check out this post, and this one too!).

I've fallen in love with many of Nadine and Ron's products over the years, but my all-time favourites have to be Everybody Loves the Sun and Vanilla Best Skin Ever.

If you ever visit one of their festival booths, you'll have the opportunity to play in a veritable Living Libations garden, testing out and trying on many different scents, lotions, and potions.

A few natural beauty tips from me to you! For other natural beauty tips and tricks, check out these great posts from Kitchen Fairy and Meghan Elizabeth - I am loving the beet inspired blusher, Meghan.

What are some of your favourite natural beauty products?

Wow Marlie, you are so knowledgeable about natural health, I love it! Dry brushing is great, I normally do it once a week before using a full body natural mud pack which leaves my skin tingling and so clean. Raw honey is awesome, I've used it with lemon juice as a facial mask, and sometimes with cornmeal to also lightly exfoliate. I love organic foods and am always trying to be healthier with my diet. As for yoga well - I do what I can, nothing like the flexibility that you have, it's harder I think being a guy, but I really enjoy the stretches. I have a great website for natural skin care, I'd like to leave my link here if it's ok. I look forward to reading up on your blog more. Cheers!

I love love love to read about natural skin care routines! This is one of my favorite posts to date. Great information and beauty tips! Last year I decided that I wanted to use more natural hair & skin care products. I've focused mostly on products that contain argan oil. There are so many different "natural" products out there that I found choosing which products to use overwhelming. I relied mainly on blogs (such as yours), user reviews, etc. to help me choose what I would try. My favorite product after experimenting is Defend(purelementnaturals.com, which is a blend of argan oil and essential oils. Just recently I tried out their scrub, "Glow" as well and am extremely impressed with the results and what using quality, natural products can do for your skin!
